Strategy #1: Planning For Online Success

You can want to do the right thing, and you can even want to do it for the right reasons. But if you don’t apply the right principles, you can still hit a wall.

Goal setting is a powerful process. Stephen Covey calls it, “the manifestation of creative imagination and independent will.” Setting goals is the first step in planning your success.

Goal setting is the practicality of “eating our elephants one bite at a time,” and of translating vision into achievable, actionable doing.

Here are three vital questions you must ask yourself: What? Why? and How?

1. What do I want to accomplish? What is the end I have in mind? (i.e.earn an extra $1000 per week, per month…)

2. Why do I want to do it? i.e. To pay for my child’s college education, buy a car, go back to school. You have to decide the “why?”

3. How am I going to do it? What key principles will I need to achieve my goals? What service or product can you provide that the marketplace wants or needs? What problems can you solve?

Once these three questions are answered you can begin the planning process toward actionable steps.

I want to make money online is not a goal! That is a wish…

A goal must be specific in nature. It should be quantifiable and time bound. Here is an example. I want to earn $500 each month beginning in the next 90 days. The $500/month makes it quantifiable. The “per month” and the 90 day time frame establishes a framework that is achievable.

I am going to fast forward here for a moment.

What will it take to earn $500 per month? Let’s examine this further. Let’s say you’ve selected an affiliate product that pays a commission of $47. If we break the process down it might look like this:

$500/month/$47 = 11 Sales

11 Sales/4.3 weeks = 2.5 sales/week (3 sales)

If the conversion rate is 1% (meaning that for every 100 people who visit the “sales page” you make 1 sale… You need to drive 300 visitors per week to the site.

300 visitors x 1% Conversion Rate = 3 Sales@$47 = $141

From this simple process map we can see that your #1 Priority would be to DRIVE 300 Visitors To Your Affiliate Link every week.

Internet Marketing Online: Overcome Your Biggest Challenge

If you’re new to Internet Marketing you probably already realize that there are some major challenges to making money online that the ‘gurus’ failed to mention.

In this article I will (1) identify the biggest challenge you face and (2) give you some initial steps to overcome it.



But first, your biggest challenge is not:

• Information
• Products
• Niche
• List size

The market is flooded with how-to guides, videos and audios; so information is not issue.

Clickbank, PayDotCom, Commission Junction, Amazon, Ebay can supply you with literally tens of thousands of products to sell, so it is not products.

Whether it is your passion, a hobby or the latest trend, there are millions of niches available from which you can carve out online income. So, it’s not the marketplace, niche or micro-niche.

It’s a known fact that you do not need a list to make money online; although having a list can make it a lot easier.

So… if it is not the aforementioned, what is the biggest challenge you face online?

Answer… Look in the mirror! You are your biggest challenge. More precisely, it is your mindset.

Every day, thousands of well intentioned would be online marketers enter the fray hoping to make money online. Either they’ve heard about or read that anyone can make money online, and that it’s easy even if you don’t have any experience.

With high hopes they jump in, head first. So may even do a little online research, or download some free eBooks. Before you know it, they’ve built a website and then… zilch, nada, nothing!

A few weeks or maybe a few months of struggling to make it happen and they quit. (Maybe this is you, I don’t know).

The problem in the long run was with the way they were thinking about online marketing. And here is what I mean…

The vast majority of good intentioned souls that start out in Internet Marketing do so without counting the cost. Most don’t even have a business plan. They think like employees and not like business owners. They fail to plan their work and work their plan. The do not have a BUSINESS MINDSET!

Everything they do is hodge-podge, start-stop, here-there and in the end, they accomplish very little when it comes to the things that are necessary to really turn a buck on the Internet.

The average online marketer spends more time planning than they do executing a plan. (By the way, if you’re going to fail, FAIL FAST!)

It is better to work a system, make your mistakes early and discover what works and what does not, than to get stuck in analysis-paralysis reading tons of guides, watching hours of videos and laying out plans that never amount to a hill of beans.

So here is the first step of how to overcome this problem quickly and easily.

1. Planning. You must have a game plan before you do anything else. Consider this; every successful enterprise begins with a plan. It does not matter if you are a Fortune 500 company or a mom & pop operation. You need a plan. So grab a yellow pad and let’s start crafting a plan of action around some basic questions.

a. Why are you starting an online business? Be specific (and to make money is not the real answer). This is the most important question you need to answer because the answer to this question is what will sustain you during the tough times ahead. Hint: Most of the time it involves a lifestyle change. Money is merely to medium of exchange to effect the change!

b. What is it that you need the money for? Why do this as opposed to getting a part time job? Don’t rush to answer but really think about your reason.

2. What price are you willing to pay to achieve your goals? This question relates to time, effort and money. How much time are you willing to invest? How much effort are you willing to put forth in order to perfect your skills? How much money are you willing to invest in training materials and tools for your business?

a. If you are married and/or have children, you need to discuss this with your partner and explain your decision and that it will take some time to see results. (Believe me, if you don’t you’re setting yourself up for possible tension)

3. How much money do you want to earn from your online business? Be specific. Then break it down (annually, monthly, weekly, daily)

4. Over what period of time (realistically) do you want to achieve your income goals?

Start by answering these questions. Of course there are more, but this will get you started. Now, if you’re already involved online and not seeing the kind of success you had hoped for, maybe now is a good time to revisit these questions.

Online Marketing: Back To Basics


I’ve spent the past several months consuming myself with all of the latest tips, tricks, techniques and strategies promoted by some Internet Marketing’s best known experts. I’ve spent quite a bit of money and time researching the latest product launches to find out if this stuff really works! (More about that later in future posts)

It seems as though every week there’s a ‘guru’ is launching a new product with the promise that it’s the “UBER” solution to your online marketing problems. Most promise instant success and loads of cash profits. This is a conspiracy to keep you searching for SHORTCUTS… There are none!

What I’ve found is that most are variations on basic themes of Internet Marketing.
In reality… there’s seldom a real breakthrough revelation. However a few really deliver “cutting edge” strategies that work like magic.

ONLINE SUCCESS = MASTERING THE BASICS!

And here is where the vast majority of online marketers fail.

Unfortunately we live in a society that promotes the false notion that success can be achieved in 3 or 4 steps. This “microwave” mentality is as rampant in the Make Money Online world as it is in any other sector of our society.  Most people don’t want to work hard.

Magical Thinking has created within our society the notion that I can invest little or nothing and reap a whirlwind of prosperity. We call this hype!

But when the dust settles and the smoke clears it comes down to this…

Successful online marketers follow a pretty simple plan…

  1. Must have your own domain name
  2. Get a good hosting provider
  3. Get a quality auto-responder service
  4. Pick your markets (niche, affiliate, whatever)
  5. Build website/blogs related to your market
  6. Create multiple “Squeeze” Pages (split test to find which one works best)
  7. Drive traffic to your squeeze pages (bum marketing, seo, web 2.0, ppc)
  8. Build a huge list of responsive, targeted subscribers (make sure to create killer follow email series)
  9. Segment your list (get rid of tire kickers early)
  10. Refine, rinse & repeat.

Sounds easy right? So why is it that so many online marketers fail?

  1. Lack of specific knowledge of basic skills
  2. Magical thinking (i.e. you can do this without spending any money)
  3. Lack of focus (distracted by stuff that doesn’t create cash flow)
  4. No mentor
  5. No plan ( hey, it’s a business… you need a business plan, duh)
  6. No funded proposal (your business should pay for itself)
  7. Lazy
  8. Cheap (false notion that you can build a business purely using rehashed “free” resources)

Internet Income… Affiliate Marketer or a Business Opportunity Seeker?


There are a lot of people who, when they become interested in making money online, turn to Affiliate Marketing. This is not surprising as it can be a fairly easy entry into Internet income; at least it seems so at first. In going the Affiliate Marketer route, there is no need to have your own product and, in some cases, you can even get by without a web site. There are some affiliate programs that actually provide each of their affiliates with their own replicated web site to sell the products or services. Others running affiliate programs have sales pages that the marketer can send potential customers to. The mechanism, like email, for sending the prospect is encoded with the affiliate marketer’s unique affiliate ID number so that the proper marketer gets credit for the sale and receives the resultant commission.

A high percentage of people who begin affiliate marketing don’t make enough money to continue in it very long. Often, they end up spending more of their own money advertising and promoting affiliate products and/or services then they actually make. This is truly unfortunate because a lot of these people are already in a precarious financial position and that is the reason they are looking to make some money online. They get so excited about promoting and hopefully selling someone’s product or service that they don’t do adequate investigation before getting involved.

Selling anything on the Internet is normally a very difficult proposition. Anyone considering affiliate marketing should take a serious look at that term “Affiliate Marketing.” Sometimes they are referred to a “Affiliate Programs” or something like that. Trust me on this, the most important word in Affiliate Marketing is Marketing. Even if it does not appear in the phrase, it is the key word. If people don’t know immediately that they are in the marketing business, not the affiliate business, they are destined to fail. It is all about marketing. If you are not into marketing you should not be in Affiliate Programs.

People considering any type of Internet business must be very, very careful. We live in an age where there are a lot of charlatans and unscrupulous people on the internet who are preying on the “newbies” (those new to Internet Marketing). Once one starts looking for an appropriate online business the liars and scam artists seem to come out of the woodwork and have but one goal… to separate you from your money. You have probably seen some of the hype: Make $40,000 by noon tomorrow; Do nothing and make $500 an hour; How I made $1,000,000 in three months. There is no end to these claims, but I can tell you, except in very rare instances they are lies. Think about it for a minute… If I really had a way to make $150,000 per month, would I share it with anyone for $47.00? Not unless it is all of those $47.00 payments that makes me the $150,000. But then, after you pay the $47.00 how will you make that kind of money? You won’t.

Please understand, there ARE legitimate opportunities out there. But it seems to me the crooks outnumber the honest businesses about 10 to 1. So be careful.

If you want to go the business opportunity route instead of (or along with) the Affiliate Marketing I suggest you start small. Keep your required up front investment small enough that if you lose it all it won’t hurt much. Make sure you are comfortable with the program and you can see yourself promoting it. Once you are in, remember it’s all MARKETING!

This is far better than promising something and then not delivering. No one likes to have a bunch of guarantees made to them only to find out they were all talk and no follow through.

Rather then over inflating your promises with hyped-up hard selling jargon, simply state your guarantee and then over deliver on your promises. If you tell your prospects they can reach you anytime day or night, you need to be available to them 24/7. Instead of making empty promises, why not assure them their email or phone call will be returned within 24 hours and then strive to respond within 12 hours? Also, you can provide bonuses, free samples and excellent customer service as a way to over-deliver.

Make Use of Affiliates

Use affiliates to sell your products and services. If you sell a product, whether it’s a physical product or a digital product, why not have other people market it for you?

By establishing an affiliate program, you establish a sales force for little to no extra out of pocket expense. It’s great because they only get paid when they refer a sale, and you get paid too. This works very well with digital products because there are no additional costs once the product is created, regardless of how many copies are sold.

Affiliates market and sell your product for a percentage of the sale, so be generous with your payout. If you give them 50% or more of the profit then they are likely to stick with your program and work for those sales, while you pocket the remainder of the sales price as passive income. Your affiliates put their time and money into marketing your product for you.

These three marketing tips will help you move from spending tons of your money on your online business marketing to making tons of money from your marketing instead.

That said, when it comes to quality posts, extraordinarily knowledgeable members and moderators, this board is hands down the best around! Highly recommended.

2. Selfstartersweeklytips.com/forum–This is an excellent forum. It attracts mostly “newbies” and a high percentage of WAHM (Work-At-Home-Moms). It has extremely competent moderators and friendly, welcoming members. The forums focus revolves around providing newbies with free or low-cost Internet Marketing resources. Highly recommended.

3. Warriorforum.com/forum–This is another good forum. The discussion board is open to all, but is especially aimed at Warrior members. It may seem a bit unstructured, but you’ll find a lot of helpful posts there. In fact, I’ll venture to say, you’ll find some information there that you can’t find anywhere else.
If you’re into JV’s (Joint Ventures), this is the forum for you. But before you can post your offer in the forum, they ask that you contribute something of value to the forum first. In fact, the forum clearly states: WARNING: If your first post to our forum is a “Joint Venture” deal it will be deleted. We ask that you try to give some value here first “before” you ask for Joint Ventures.
The Warrior site has high traffic, and as a result many of the visitors constitute a more targeted market than Internet-surfers in general. It appears to be a close-knit community, and is definitely worth checking out. Recommended.

4. internetbasedmoms.com/bb/–This is an excellent forum. As its name suggests, it caters to WAHM (Work-At-Home-Moms).
Internet based moms online business resource center has been designed for moms who are choosing an online business, building web pages, and learning to promote their business online.
The forum appears to have friendly, welcoming members and the moderators are extremely competent as well. Highly recommended.

5. businessknowhow.com/forum–If you own a small business, this is the best small business forum on the Internet. Business Know-How is an award-winning small business destination site for home offices and small businesses and is known for providing practical information about starting, growing and managing small and home-based businesses. The Business Know-How web site and newsletter together reach 1.5 million individuals each year.
The forum moderators run a tight, no-nonsense forum. The forum is expertly moderated and the website itself is outstanding. Highly Recommended.
